These conversations are everywhere in the halls of the two science conventions I have attended in Anchorage – “Do you know where you’re going to be working this summer? Is your program going to be cut? What are you hearing?” Scientists, especially postdocs, are emerging from the fog of denial into what may be The Big Chill. Federal policy is lurching and it’s suddenly a discernible advantage to be in a program so small, insignificant, obscure or uncontroversial as to be below the attention threshold of the Twittersphere and the hatemongers of Fox Cable and hate radio.
How much difference is there between keeping your head down and watching what you say?
